Keep your grocery list on your iPhone Home Screen

Put the few things you need to buy on your Home Screen before you leave. A personal grocery checklist is useful for quick errands when a shopping list buried inside another app is easy to overlook.

How to do it

  1. Create a Groceries list

Make a list note called ‘Groceries.’ Add one item per row, with quantities where they matter: ‘2 cans of tomatoes’ is more useful than ‘Tomatoes.’

  2. Put it where you will see it

Add a medium or large Sticky Widgets widget to your main Home Screen and select Groceries in Edit Widget.

  3. Review before leaving

Check the list against what you already have. Put the next store section’s items near the top if the full list is longer than the widget.

  4. Check off purchases

Tap each item’s checklist control on a supported system as you shop. Open the note to add an item or review the rest of a longer list.

A small grocery run

  • Milk — 1 carton
  • Tomatoes — 2 cans
  • Bread
  • Apples — 6

Example text to enter in your own note.

Organize for your actual store visit

For a small run, the order you walk through the store can be more useful than a formal category system. Put produce together, then the next aisle’s items, so you spend less time hunting through your own note.

Sticky Widgets does not automatically turn items into aisle categories or a meal plan. You write the list and decide its order. Keep recipe details elsewhere and put the ingredients you need to buy into the checklist.

Keep a personal list on your own devices

You can use iCloud sync to keep the same grocery note on your own iPhone and iPad. Each device needs its own widget placement and selection.

This is not a collaborative shopping list for separate Apple Accounts. If two people need to add items to the same shared list while shopping separately, choose a tool with a verified collaboration workflow.

Choose the Home Screen or a pinned note

A Home Screen widget gives you a free place to view your list after unlocking. Premium pinning uses a Lock Screen Live Activity for another way to see the note.

A pinned list can end or be dismissed under system rules. Keep the original list in the app, and use the Home Screen widget when you need a placement that is independent of the Live Activity’s lifetime.

Common questions

Does the app suggest groceries or sort them automatically?

This workflow uses a checklist you write and arrange yourself. Automatic grocery categorization is not part of this guide.

Can I add an item with Shortcuts?

Yes. Sticky Widgets provides an Add Item to List action. The Shortcuts guide explains how to select your list and supply item text.

Do I need Premium to shop from a Home Screen list?

No. Basic lists and Home Screen widgets are free. Premium is needed for the separate Lock Screen pinning feature.
